    Biography

    Professor Clément Imbert acquired his B.Sc. and Ph.D. from The University of the West Indies (UWI) and his M.Sc. from Brunel University of West London, UK. He is married to Sharon. He has been lecturing at UWI since 1980 where he was Deputy Dean of Engineering. He has over 160 publications. He is also very well known for his work in Continuing Engineering Education and was a member of the Executive Council of the International Association for Continuing Engineering Education for several years.

    During his academic career he has been a consultant locally and abroad. Prof. Imbert served on eight different APETT Executive Councils in several positions, and was President from 1993 to 1994. He continues to be involved in the activities of the Association and always makes himself available to lend his assistance.

    He is a Fellow of APETT, and was previously honoured with the award of Career of Excellence. He was Secretary-General of the Council of Caribbean Engineering Organizations from 1996 to 2006 and also served in the American Society for Materials International and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, of which he is a Fellow. He is on the International Steering Committee of the International Network for Engineering Education and Research, and International Conference on Engineering Education. He has also served on several organizing committees of international conferences.

    Professor Imbert has served several private and public organisations, including The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT), the University of Technology, Jamaica, and the Trinidad & Tobago Bureau of Standards (TTBS). He was Chairman of the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) and Metal Industries Company. He was also a Board member of the Caribbean Industrial Research Institute (CARIRI), Accreditation Council of Trinidad and Tobago (ACTT), National Training Agency and the Princess Elizabeth Centre. He was a member of the CARICOM Working Group on Trade Negotiations and the CARICOM Advisory Council to the Prime Ministerial Sub-Committee on the CSME. He received the UWI Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Public Service.

    Professor Imbert is well known for his work on the steelpan. At CARIRI in 1974 he commissioned the first steelpan mechanical press, working with legendary pan tuners Anthony Williams and Bertie Marshall. He is co-founder of the UWI Steelpan Development Centre and is a member of the team that developed the G-Pan for which, in 2007, the team was awarded a Chaconia Medal Gold. He is on the Board of Panland Trinidad and Tobago and Chairman of the Standardisation Committees for the Steelpan of TTBS. He is Technical Manager of Birdsong Steel Orchestra and Chairman of the Birdsong Academy. Since 2004 he has co-coordinated a steelpan tuning programme for high school students on behalf of the Pan in Schools Coordinating Council and also coordinated a Certificate in Advanced Steelpan Tuning for UTT.
