• We Pay Tribute to Leroy Calliste - Soldier and Stalwart

birdsong is deeply saddened by the untimely passing of a soldier and stalwart of the birdsong family, Leroy Calliste who at the time of his passing was a Director on the Board of Management of birdsong Enterprises Limited (bENT), one of birdsong’s social enterprises involved in landscaping and environmental services.

Leroy joined the birdsong steel orchestra in 1975 one year after our first Panorama appearance, while a student on the St. Augustine Campus of the University of the West Indies (1974-1977) where he was pursuing a BSc. Degree in Management Studies which he completed in 1977. Leroy played 6-bass and was recognised as a consistent, very dependable and disciplined player and was one of the many who made a valuable contribution in moving the fledgling steel orchestra to the successful institution into which it has evolved.

Leroy attended Trinity College (Moka, Maraval) from 1966-1974 where he completed O and A Levels. He went on to complete a BSc. Degree. He subsequently joined RBC in 1995 rising to Group Financial Controller and Consultant in a career of almost 24 years. He willingly volunteered his time, accounting skills and professional experience when he agreed to serve as a Director on the board of bENT helping to strengthen its record keeping and management systems.

Leroy in his recent retirement was learning music theory and pan performance,  enjoyed travelling with his wife June and enjoyed exercise through cycling. Leroy was humble, positive in outlook, well respected and  well-liked.  -“one of the good ones gone too soon”. He leaves to mourn his wife - June Alexander Calliste, his children - Sekou Calliste, Dr. Jabari Calliste & Frying Calliste and many family and friends who will dearly miss him.
