The term "segue" in music refers to a seamless change from one musical topic to another. In this manner, Evolution is the next step for our Small Ensemble, which was founded by the late Raf Robertson as a vehicle for our more focused and brilliant students at the Music Academy. Evolution re-affirms our possibility, our inventiveness as our erstwhile apprentices have transitioned into master craftsmen — in their arrangements, technical mastery of their instruments or indeed as composers. As the dean of Caribbean music, Frankie McIntosh observed “They have gone way beyond where Raf left them”.
The Evolution lineup includes Jeerel Samuel, Daniel Ryan, Randell Adams, Justin Phillip, Theron Shaw, Rodney Harris, Joshua Richardson, Gary Haywood, Von Best, Derrianne Dyett among others. The Concert repertoire can only be called pathbreaking as you are invited to enjoy a lush rendition of Ray Holman's hidden gem, Memory of Your Smile, as well as a quirky but elegant rendition of Bob Marley's Running Away. Savour your wry, wistful smile as Segue's rendition of the late Zanda's FancySailor glides gracefully across Beryl Mc Burnie's stage. Evolution's transcription of Raf's Forward Home is particularly poignant because it was the piece with which several members of the band won the Junior Festival. Come concert night, we invite you to bear testimony to their Evolution. You would doubtlessly endorse our proclamation — These are our beloved children in whom we are well pleased.
