• Birdsong Vacation camp - How its changing peoples lives

From July 11–August 13 2016, Birdsong Academy is hosting its 13th annual Vacation Music Camp. The camp is an extension of the Birdsong Academy; a response to the demand for high-quality, accessible training for children and teens who are poorly served by both the formal and informal music education establishments.

Many people have endorsed the Birdsong Academy for their vital contributions to the development of our society. The esteemed performer and music teacher at the Academy of the Perfroming Arts with over 20 years' experience Aidan Chamberlain said:

I keep a close interest in the musical education of the youth of Trinidad and Tobago and have returned a number of times to enjoy the music that birdsong has produced.  Many of the musicians they trained are now playing professionally in Trinidad and Tobago and the contribution to our society cannot be underestimated.

The Vacation programme is an intensive 5 week music camp conducted from 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at venues in the Tunapuna community, including the Birdsong panyard, UWI St. Augustine campus and Tapia House. With a limited capacity of 110 students, admission is by audition.  During this time, students follow courses such as Arranging, Aural development, Movement, African Drumming amongst others at no cost. A feature of the Vacation programme is a series of “Open Mike” concerts in which students perform and produce 'al fresco' for their peers and the community.

Over the years, the programme has bore tangible fruit where, supported by birdsong’s Scholarship Fund, one alumnus will next year begin undergraduate music study in the U.S. whilst another is engaged in post graduate study at Prins Claus Conservatory in Holland. Yet another is pursuing medicine in the Republic of Georgia. Several alumni are enrolled locally in tertiary level music programmes.

The Birdsong Academy offers many instruments, course and opportunities. Offered instruments include: Flute, Clarinet, Oboe, Trumpet Saxophone (Alto, Tenor, Baritone), Euphonium, Trombone, Tuba, Bassoon, Guitar, Steelpan, African Drums, Drum kit, Voice.

The Academy also offers ranging music courses such as: Music Theory, Performance, Arranging, Movement, You the Creator (Intro to Composition), Aural development, Harmony, Sight Reading, Technique, Theatre Arts, Personal Development, Local Music History, Ensemble Playing.
