birdsong Steel Orchestra was established on 22 September, 1973 at the St. Augustine campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI). Recognizing the need for greater integration of the University and it's surrounding communities of Tunapuna and Monte Grande the fledgling band's leadership invited the members of Echo Diamonds (Tunapuna), Tunapuna Hilltones and Turban Starland (Pasea Tunapuna) to participate with them in the Panorama effort of 1974. birdsong has since entered every national Panorama competition.
Today, birdsong is a well-established community band with a long history of Pan innovation and experimentation.
